Multicultural Seniors Program
Supporting Seniors from Multicultural Backgrounds
Our Multicultural Seniors Program is dedicated to supporting seniors aged 65 and above from diverse cultural backgrounds. We aim to help them build stronger connections within their communities, especially those facing social and personal support barriers, as well as celebrate their cultural background. Seniors are particularly vulnerable to social isolation and loneliness due to different factors, such as the loss of friends and family, reduced mobility, or lower income.
We work to increase seniors' awareness of healthy lifestyle options, reduce social isolation, facilitate connections with our different programs and other service providers, and host information sessions and link them to the services they need, such as applying for seniors card, seniors health card and My Aged Care services. Our goal is to improve their wellbeing, knowledge and quality of life.
Being a multicultural organisation, we offer a culturally sensitive approach and can support seniors in multiple languages.
We support them through:
- Information sessions for them to gain knowledge about My Aged Care services
- Providing cultural activities that lead to connection
- Connecting them with our services or other service providers
Our Initiatives
My Aged Care Information Sessions
We run monthly My Aged Care Information Sessions with people from multicultural backgrounds in their languages, where they learn how to access My Aged Care services and other senior support the government and services providers offer them.
Cultural Activities
Celebrating the multicultural backgrounds of seniors is very important to us. That's why we provide cultural initiatives and events that foster connections and a sense of belonging among them, helping to reduce social isolation. Our initiatives include hosting activities and events that embrace their culture, as well as supporting those organised by community groups.
We have organised many events this year where community groups have been involved, such as Latin Community Hub, Australian Chinese Women’s Federation, and the Portuguese Australian Women's Association Inc. Each month, we run these workshops in their own language. Participants learn to access essential services such as My Aged Care and improve digital skills like using Google Maps, social media, and staying safe from scams. These workshops are not only about learning new skills but also about connecting with other community members and engaging in wellbeing activities like gardening and dancing.
Individual Support
We provide one on one support to seniors from diverse cultural backgrounds, guiding them in accessing essential services. Often, we can offer support in their language, easing their understanding due to language barriers.
